Constructing button hole covers

The first set of my recent holiday journals was a hybrid of button-hole and long-stitching design. The long-stitching weave in and out of the buttle-hole cover.

Here is how the covers are made:

Construct the case with 5 pieces of boards: 2 for the covers and 3 for the spine. Align the boards and glue onto the cover paper. Cris cross cut the cover paper through the openings on the spine, and then glue them onto the inside of the case.

Attach the island inlay that covers the entire inside of the case, minus the squares. Let it dry.

Through the button holes, you should see the island inlay from the outside of the cover.

Cut out the excess island inlay through the button holes.

You will see the cut edges through the button holes but they will be covered by the stitches.

I am an aspiring book binder and I love the button hole covers! Thank you for posting this! I have a couple of questions that I would love for you to help with me if possible!

How do i attach the pages to the cover? what stitch do I do? Do you have a step by step explaining this? :-D

Hi,

I am a student and have a question. When you have a paper covered book, do you glue the board side first or the back of the paper and whats the best glue..I am afraid the paper may buckle or tear when I crease it..thanks for your great tips.

I would like to make a buttonhole cover for a book I am making. I have a question, when I cut the cover pieces how much does the foredge of the cover extend from the signatures, or is the cover flush with the textblock? Thanks I love the book!!!

Usually for a long stitch book the signature is flushed with the edge of the head and tail, maybe with a hair or two of space. This is to keep the signature taut against the spine.

Hey...
I wanted to make such a binding for my book. Is there anything that can help me attaching the spine with the two covers at the adjoining vertical edges to make it look better? Thanks for sharing this... Its really great!

The stitching actually holds the book block onto the cover. See link for sewing pattern above.

I was trying to make the cover and i have a question. How to we stick the hinge? The photo reveals a white long medium of holding the separate pieces. Thanks a million for shaing such great book...!
